Your eye health is as important to us as it is to you. Eye exams not only ensure that your eyes are healthy, but they also detect several common eye problems early on. They are critical in determining if your prescription should be changed or if you should begin wearing glasses.
Adults should have an eye exam every two years, and children should have one every year. Patients with underlying health concerns, on the other hand, may be requested to return every year by the optometrist.
First, a member of our Upton Park team will do a free OCT scan, digital retinal photography (DRP), eye pressure test (tonometry), and autorefractor tests on you.
A tonometer is used to measure the internal pressure of each eye by blowing a light puff of air over the surface of each eye. This assists your optometrist in determining your risk of developing glaucoma.
The autorefractor tests determines whether you are long-sighted or short-sighted by examining your eyes' ability to focus. This provides an estimate of your prescription to the optometrist.
A fundus image is a photograph of the back of the eye (digital retinal photography). This image is recorded on our system and allows us to track any changes in your eye health throughout future appointments.
The optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan allows the optometrist to assess the health of your eyes by viewing the deeper layers of your eye and its structure. This is then analysed by our optometrist, who decides how healthy your eyes are and whether you should be concerned about any underlying health concerns such as:
In essence, an OCT scan is critical in presenting the optometrist with a clearer picture of your eye health while testing your eyes, and it serves as a baseline reference image to monitor any changes over time.
The eye exam will also check your eyes' health and figure out what your prescription is.
A regular NHS or private eye test is an examination in which an optician examines your vision and eye health for any abnormalities. Eye exams also check for eyeglass prescriptions, which differ from contact lens prescriptions.
During a contact lens examination, we will examine the health of the front surface of your eye. We will also take eye curvature readings. Based on this information, we will select a lens that is ideal for your eye shape and health, as well as determine the correct contact lens prescription.
On request, you will be able to obtain a copy of your prescription.
An eye test is a comprehensive examination in which an optician examines your eyesight and eye health for any issues. During eye exams, your glasses prescription is also checked. This is different from your contact lens prescription.
OCT is an abbreviation for optical coherence tomography. This non-invasive retinal scan provides a complete view of the retina's inner structures. This enables us to evaluate the health of the retina more effectively and diagnose eye disorders at an earlier stage. At Specialeyes Eyecare, we include a free OCT scan with every eye exam.
The first thing we perform when you see our optician in Green Street is a quick, non-invasive pre-screening test to obtain a sense of your overall eye health. During the pre-screening, we will measure the shape of your eyes and may need to record pressure readings.
In addition, we also offer a complimentary OCT retinal scan to all our patients. This allows us to diagnose any eye issues and track the health of your eyes over time. Following the pre-screening, you will next be taken to a test room, during which the optometrist will perform all essential tests.
